The Spear Lily is a tall perennial herb (no woody stems) with long, bright green leaves that form a giant rosette. The leaves may reach a length of three metres.

Large deep crimson flowers occur on tall terminal stalks up to five metres high appearing in spring. The Spear Lily is a spectacular landscaping plant with both foliage and flowers are eye-catching features.
Prefers a light to medium well-drained soil in a protected sunny position, drought and frost tender.

Native to Queensland.

Grow notes:

Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C.

  1. Soak seed overnight in lukewarm water.
  2. Sow the depth of seed 3-5mm deep.
  3. Germination should occur in 21-28 days @ 18-22°C.

General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
