A rapid growing with smooth silver grey bark which breaks into fissures on older trees. Leave ovate to lanceolate acuminate leaflets with serrated margins. Greenish white or brownish purple minute flowers occurring in dense pendant clusters appearing in spring. During winter the large unopened buds are jet black. Ash leaves are one of the latest to open. Popular Bonsai subject. Native to the UK and Europe.
Prefers a cool deep moist well-drained soil, frost resistant but drought tender.
Cold stratify in the refrigerator 60 days or can be over wintered in the garden in colder climates.
