Lacy Phacelia, also known as Lacy Scorpionweed or Fiddleneck Purple Tansy, produces beautiful violet flowers that appear in clusters resembling fiddleheads.
As the plant continues to bloom, the clusters unfurl to reveal more flowers.
It is widely used as a cover crop and for bee forage.
This plant is one of the top honey-producing plants for honeybees and attracts many native pollinators and beneficial insects. Additionally, Phacelia is tolerant of poor soils and drought. Phacelia will survive mild frosts to overwinter and bloom in spring.
A native American wildflower found in California and Arizona, growing in open flats and slopes.
To grow Phacelia successfully, sow seeds 5mm deep in well-spaced 15cm holes. Avoid surface scattering as seeds require darkness to germinate.
Sow in subtropical regions from early Autumn to early Winter, in temperate regions in Spring or Autumn, and in cool climates from Spring to Early Summer. Sow seeds at a depth of 5mm, and germination can take from 14 to 28 days.
