Japanese pumpkin is a globe shaped squash with a skin which is smooth and dark green with pale green stripes. An average weight 1-1.5 kg but can weigh as much as 3.5 kg. The orange coloured flesh is very sweet. Kabocha contains large amounts of vitamin A. The seeds are nutritious as well, full of essential fatty acids.

Adaptable to most good garden soils but prefers a rich soil with generous amount of water in full sun.

Sow: 2cm deep
Sow 3-4 seeds in raised mounds 1 metre apart in direct in growing position. Thin to to the stwo strongest plants in each mound.

Germination: 6-10 days
Maturity: 14 weeks
