A hardy fast growing annual ancient plant up to 120 cm in height. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, the fresh leaves are high in vitamins and protein.

This “food of kings” dates back to the time of the pharaohs, when an Egyptian king drank it in soup to recover from an illness. Today, it’s one of the most widely eaten vegetables in Egypt.

It is the primary source of jute fibre. The leaves and young fruits are used as a vegetable, the dried leaves are used for tea and as a soup thickener, and the seeds are edible.

Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils, prefers an open sunny position.
