Fast-growing vines may be ground-dwelling but grow best when given upward support. If growing for sponges, allow the fruits to turn from green to yellow on the vine. Fruits will lose quite a bit of moisture and become light.
The young fruit is eaten as a vegetable and is commonly grown for that purpose in tropical Asia. Unlike the young fruit, the fully ripened fruit is strongly fibrous and inedible and is used to make scrubbing bath sponges.

Harvest, pull off the thin outer skin and remove seeds. The fibrous core should then be bleached and dried before use. Grown both for its edible fruits and as a source of sponges.

Grow notes:

Adaptable to most good garden soils but prefers rich soil with a generous amount of water in full sun.
