Sandhill Wattle or Pin Bush
Characteristics: Small to medium shrub 1-7m
Seeds per packets: 20
Typically a small to medium fast growing shrub or small tree with golden yellow round or rod shaped flowers occurring in pairs from stalks at the base of the leaves. Flowering occurs from July to October.
Thin phyllodes (leaves) around 2mm wide and 5-16cm long finishing in a point.
Endemic to Western Australia extending into South Australia.
Previously know as Acacia acuminata sub speices burkitti.
Prefers a gravelly soil but is adaptable to a range of well drained soils. Easily grown in most temperate areas, flowers best in full sun, frost hardy and drought tolerant with medium salt tolerance
Although seed can be sown most of the year in Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C.
Acacia seeds germinate readily, however they do have a hard outer coating which is impervious to water and generally germination will normally not occur unless the seed is scarified by abrading or pre-treated with boiling water first.
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
