Borlotti beans are very productive producing attractive pink and white speckled pods and beans.
Popular in Italian and Portuguese dishes they have excellent quality beans and can be eaten either young in the pods or left to mature as dried beans.
They are useful in soups and stews and are great for both dried beans and pods. This dwarf bush variety produces high yields, and the dried beans are stored well.
The plants produce large pods, up to 12cm long, containing speckled red beans that dry to a tan colour.
The pods are excellent for eating when young, but they are more often left to fully mature for dried bean production. The beans have an excellent flavour that is ideal for soups, stews, and homemade baked beans. These beans are very productive, and the dried beans are store very well.
To grow beans successfully, it is best to sow them directly into their growing position in full sun.
Soaking seed overnight prior to sowing helps with the up-take of moisture for germination.
Sow the seeds 2 cm deep and 10-12cm apart, with rows 50-60cm apart from each other.
It is important to keep the soil moist, but not too wet or dry.
Beans are sensitive to frost, so it is best to grow them after the last frost.
