Arabica accounts for about 75% of the world coffee. Coffea arabica is easy to grow and makes a very attractive houseplant in cool climates.
A two metre plant can produce 1-2 kg (2-4 lb) of coffee a year. Hardy to minus 2 °C.

Native to Ethiopia.

Prefers a rich deep soil in a protected partially shaded position, although it is adaptable to warm temperate areas it prefers tropical to subtropical climates. Hardy to minus 2°C.

Although seed can be sown most of the year in Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 20-24°C for this species.

Seeds germinate readily after soaking in warm water overnight.

  1. Soak overnight in warm water.
  2. The swollen seed can then be sown, re-treat seeds that have not swollen.
  3. Sow the depth of seed size.
  4. Keep warm & moist but not wet.
  5. Germination should occur in 14-28 days @ 20-24°C.

General note: Seeds of many plant species are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
