An evergreen tree that produces a mass of strongly fragrant yellow flowers 5cm across from summer to autumn.
The flowers from this tree are used to make the world's most expensive perfume. In India they are primarily used for worship at temples due to the fragrance.
Native to South Asia.
Prefers a light to medium well-drained soil in a protected sunny position, frost resistant but drought tender.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 20-24°C for this species.
If the seed fails to swell carefully nick the seed with a sharp knife and re-treat with hot water.
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
