An old-fashioned cultivar Nasturtium Empress of India is a dwarf, non-trailing Nasturtium 40-45 tall with stunning scarlet flowers and deep, blue-green leaves.
Nasturtiums make excellent bedding plants and are also good for growing in rockeries, troughs, tubs, or large hanging baskets and also a great pollinator plant that attracts bees, nectar-feeding birds and other beneficial insects.
All parts of the plant are edible, use to brighten up salads or used in stir-fries, flowers have a peppery taste.
Tropaeolum, commonly known as Nasturtium, is a genus of roughly 80 species of annual and perennial herbaceous flowering plants in the plant family of Tropaeolaceae that originates in South and Central America.
Adaptable to most conditions prefers well-drained moist soil but also tolerates nutritionally poor soil.
The best time of year to sow.
- Tropical: Late Summer to Early Spring
- Temperate: Spring to Early Autumn
- Cold: Spring to Early Autumn
Seed can be soaked overnight to assit with moisture uptake.
For best results sow 2-3cm deep directly in the growing position.
For mass planting scatter seed and rake over at a rate of 13.5g/m2
Germination: 7-14 days at a soil teperture of 16-20°C
