Mexican Weeping Pine
Characteristics: Large evergreen tree 30 m
Seeds per packets: Approx. 15
A graceful elegant tree with reddish bark, spreading branches and pendulous long grass-green needle like foliage that drape straight down creating a softer silhouette than any other pine tree. The cones are also an attractive feature of this tree being about 10 cm long with shiny scales.
An outstanding, unusual tree and an ideal candidate for landscaping or specimen tree. Also make a useful bonsai specimen.
The timber is pale to salmon-pink in colour, moderately soft and smelling strongly of aniseed when cut.
Native to Mexico.
Adaptable to a range of soils and conditions. Moderately drought-tolerant but dislikes prolonged periods under -10° C.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
General note: Seeds of many plants are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
