A small shrub variable in height from 60cm to 2 metres with silvery grey leaves and an abundance of tall candle-like feathery flower heads of grey and pink on stems that are suitable for use as cut flowers.
The flowers occur in winter and spring. A hardy plant in most situations including containers.

Ideal for regeneration or arid conditions.
Occurs naturally in the drier regions of Carnarvon, Gascoyne, Little Sandy Desert, Murchison and the Pilbara in Western Australia.

Adaptable to most well-drained soil types including stony soil, prefers an open sunny position, drought and frost resistant.

Propagation from seed:

Ptilotus can have a low viability rate.

  • No pre-treatment is required.
  • Seed best sown in November and grown as a summer annual.
  • Established plants require an open position in full sun with excellent drainage.

General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
