Best sown directly early in the season. For earlier planting in cooler climates raise in pots in warm conditions and transplant after 3-4 weeks. Requires temperatures of around 18-20°C for germination.
If sowing direct, plant 3-4 seeds 15-20mm deep in mounds, later thinning to the two strongest plants.
Plant in free-draining soil in a position with full sun.
For best results fertilise and keep well watered, keep the soil moist and avoid overhead watering where possible.
Harvest after 75-90 days when the stem turns brown and begins to break away from the fruit.
