An old Italian heirloom variety dating back to the 1600's.
An unusual looking “warted” rockmelon with very intense sweet orange flesh that is soft and firm with an excellent taste.
Grows to around 1.5 kg. Best picked when they are still green and yellow as they are fully ripe once they turn completely yellow.
Referred by some Italians Italians as “Brutto ma Buono,” which translates to “Ugly but Good.
Adaptable to most good garden soils but prefers a humus rich soil with a generous amount of water in full sun.

Best sown direct early in the season. For earlier planting in cooler climates raise in pots in warm conditions and transplant after 3-4 weeks. Requires temperatures of around 18-20°C for germination.
Sow in rows 40-60cm between plants and in rows 120cm apart
If sowing direct, plant 3-4 seeds 15mm deep in mounds, later thinning to the two strongest plants.
Plant in a free-draining soil in a position with full sun.
For best results fertilise and keep well watered, keep soil moist and avoid overhead watering where possible.
Harvest after 75-90 days when the stem turns brown and begins to break away from fruit.
