Blue Vervain grows between 60 and 120 cm tall. Its blue-lavender flowers occur in spikes at the tops of the branches. Blue vervain is a good component for reclamation and pollinator mixes for moister sites. It attracts a wide array of native bees and butterflies.

Plants typically self-seed in the garden, dropping their seeds on the soil at the end of the season; if left undisturbed, they may germinate and grow the following season.

Deadheading will prolong blooming.

Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in an open sunny position. Performs well in well-drained ordinary soils

Verbena hastata, commonly known as blue vervain, is a perennial flowering plant in the verbenaceae family. It grows throughout the United States and much of southern Canada.

For best results, sow 6mm deep directly into the soil where they are to grow. If growing in trays, transplant when large enough to handle.

Tropical: Late Summer to Early Spring.
Temperate: Spring or Late-Summer and Autumn.
Cold: Spring to Early Summer

Germination: 21-28 days at a soil temperature of 21-24°C.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty in discarding seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination
