Celosia cristata produces large, unusual flower heads similar to a rooster’s comb hence the common name “cockscomb”
A mix of bright-coloured flowers that are produced on sturdy, compact plants with green foliage creating a striking and unique display in border areas and as edging as well as wonderful for bouquets, fresh or dried.
To dry Celosia flowers, cut the stems and hang them upside down.

Celosia argentea var. cristata is a crested variety of Celosia known as cockscomb because the flower looks like the head of a rooster.

The leaves of this plant are edible and have a spinach-like taste while the plant is young but after flowering, the leaves turn bitter.

Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in a sunny position, richer soils produce better blooms. Thrives in hot weather.

Celosia is a small genus of edible and ornamental plants in the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae. Its species are commonly known as woolflowers or if the flower heads are crested, cockscombs.
It is believed Celosia argentea var. cristata were originally native to India, where it was saved from extinction in cultivation by the religious significance attached to the variety by Indian, Burmese, and Chinese gardeners who planted it near temples.
